July 2022 was the first time in history that the UK exceeded 40 degrees on July 19th, which was also the driest July in England since 1935, according to the met office. The demand for air treatment products, such as air conditioners, air coolers and air purifiers, rose by 251% between June and July this year, according to data from PriceRunner.
Not far behind the competition, fans also saw a large surge in popularity between June and July this year, reflecting the UK’s scorching temperatures, as demand rose by 227% and placed the category among the 30 most popular of all in July.
“The extreme heat in the UK this year has created an early demand for air cooling products, we usually see this type of spike later in the year. Just looking at fans, their popularity has more than doubled in July this year compared to the same month last year,” said Christine Gouldthorp, Consumer Expert at PriceRunner.

The right (air) conditions to stay cool in July
With a lot of Brits wanting to cool down the temperature in their home, PriceRunner noticed a price increase on fans when comparing the first and last day of July this year. The average price of a fan in the category increased by 5%.
On the other hand, the category air treatment products decreased on average by 3.5%, making it a good time to invest in a new air conditioner, air cooler, humidifier or air purifier, for example.
