Warmer weather is on the way and with it brings more time to enjoy our gardens. In a recent study by RHS, it was found that a daily dose of gardening boosts your mental wellbeing as much as running or cycling.
One of the key jobs to get gardens looking their best is sorting out overgrown lawns, to provide a space for play, relaxation, and garden picnics. If, like thousands of others around the country, you’re preparing for the first official grass cut of the year, then the lawnmower 2021 buying guide from PriceRunner is a must read.
Reporting a 126% increase in searches for Robotic lawnmowers in April 2021 compared to April 2019, it appears our interest in fuss free gardening is growing; whilst searches for Ride-on lawnmowers were up a whopping 182% this April compared to the same time last year.

Effortlessly keeping gardens in perfect shape, the compact designs of Robotic lawn mowers leave you more time to get on with other gardening tasks, weeding, sowing, and watering flower beds and containers. They are such a nifty product for the garden, we’re not surprised that they continue to be popular.
The huge rise in searches for Ride-on mowers this year may reflect the rise in people moving from cities to the countryside, which has been one of the side-effects of lockdowns, as families crave more outside space. Ideal for larger lawns, it’s an investment piece of toolkit but can cut down on heavy machinery and keep lawns looking their best.
Advice from Stuart Thomas, gardening expert at online garden centre, Primrose:
If your lawn is looking lacklustre, consider the three tenets of sunshine, showers and soil aeration. Cut branches back to keep excessive shade away. Water once a week early in the morning if the UK's frequent rain isn't cutting it. For aeration, take a fork to your lawn and poke heaps of holes. Do all of these and your lawn will be verdant before you know it. And don't mow it too short!
Lawnmowers
Searches for lawnmowers in April 2021 compared with 2020 decreased by 46%, according to PriceRunner data.
Christine Gouldthorp said: Lockdown last year created an enormous demand to keep our lawns in check and consumers stocked up on new machines, causing a somewhat weaker demand this year.
But looking at a longer perspective, searches increased by 754%, when comparing April 2021 with 2019.
2020 was a record year in many home/DIY categories, so even if the number of searches for lawn mowers decreased between April this year and last, it shows that interest is still growing as searches increased enormously over the past two years, said Christine Gouldthorp.
